Introducing Joy Schuster, conductor of the GYMC String Orchestras

About Joy Schuster

 

Joy Schuster, graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education in 1987 from Michigan State University. She went on to teach in the state of Maine as a “string specialist” in grades 3-8. In 1989, Joy came to Canada where she taught Violin with the Hamilton School Board and the Hamilton Suzuki School of Music. Joy was also a member of the Niagara Symphony and freelance Violinist during her years in Hamilton. In 1993 Joy moved to Denver, Colorado where she completed a Master’s degree in Suzuki Pedagogy and Performance. Upon graduation, Joy was elected a member of the Society of Pi Kappa Lamda, an American honour society dedicated to the furtherance of Music in Education and Education in Music. In 1996, Joy moved to her hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan where she taught with the Grand Rapids Community College Suzuki program and directed a Music Together program. In 2000, Joy moved back to Canada and began teaching at the Guelph Suzuki String School. Joy is Concertmaster of the Cambridge Symphony and conducts the Cambridge Youth Orchestra and the Guelph Youth Orchestra’s at the Guelph Youth Music Center. In 2023, Joy’s commitment and dedication to Music Education and Performance was honoured as the recipient of the prestigious Bernice Adams Music Award. Joy continues to celebrate and support Music education and performance.
