Carey West
50-60 minutes
The Guelph Youth Music Centre is pleased to introduce Carey West as our new Grade One artist for the Do Re Mi Music Education Program. Drawing from her rich experience as a performer and educator, Carey’s workshop uses movement and poetry a spring board to enhance your students’ understanding of the elements of music.
Carey West followed her passion for music developing a career as a performer and a music teacher. She has demonstrated her diversity fronting the Jazz group “Carey West and the Millionaires”, as a singer/songwriter in the Caribbean Funk outfit “The Liquidaires” and by lending her chops to the four-part vocals of the alt-bluegrass band “The Jeremiahs”. Her most recent CD “Made of Clay” was released in 2017.
She was fortunate enough to supplement a performance career with a teaching opportunity at Taddle Creek Montessori School in downtown Toronto from 2003-2017. This allowed her to facilitate children from ages 2.5-12 on their own musical journeys, many of whom continued their education in band, string and choral ensembles throughout their secondary studies. Carey is trained in Orff pedagogy levels I and II, and received an Early Childhood Music Education certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. She is currently pursuing an MA at the University of Guelph where her research focuses on vocal improvisation and pedagogy.
