Do Re Mi enriches the arts curriculum through a comprehensive music program, allowing elementary school students to acquire fundamental music skills and stimulate their creativity. Professional musicians will come into the classroom to provide an interactive workshop for teachers and students, while a study guide is given to teachers to assist with their music curriculum. Below are the different  workshops offered under the Do Re Mi program.

Kindergarten – JK and SK

Erick Traplin, Music with Erick

60 minutes

Erick has been bringing his fun-filled interactive show to children throughout Ontario and Eastern Canada for 20 years. His Rock-a-long, Sing-a-long show encourages his young audiences to interact and become part of the show. Even the most reserved children will forget their inhibitions and partake in the fun. With his rich vocals, guitar and harmonica, Erick engages children to learn through song and movement.

Grade 1

Willem Moolenbeek, Saxophonist

50-60 minutes

A concert saxophonist and recording artist, Willem introduces Grade 1 students to his family of saxophones, and helps them understand the relationship between beat, rhythm and melody in music. With simple handmade instruments, students will accompany Willem in a musical presentation during the classroom workshop.

MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.


Grade 2

John Somosi, Traditional Aboriginal Drummer and Singer

50-60 minutes

John is a founding member of the Waa Chi Wasa drum group based in Guelph. He has sung many places with that drum group such as Hillside Music Festival where he started the Native Circle 15 years ago. John’s Aboriginal Drum Circle will increase Grade 2 students’ awareness of how music is an integral aspect of Aboriginal spirituality and the role that music plays in traditions and celebrations of earth-based peoples.

Grade 3

Andrea Cook, Cellist

50-60 minutes

The Guelph Youth Music Centre is pleased to introduce Andrea Cook as our new Grade Three artist for the Do Re Mi Music Education Program. Her passion and love for music, along with her vast teaching knowledge will ensure that your students enjoy an unforgettable workshop experience.

MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.


Grade 4

Shannon Kingsbury, Musician/Children’s Performer

50-60 minutes

Shannon delivers a fun-filled workshop that covers many aspects of the Grade 4 music curriculum including how instruments work, fundamentals of music notation and the basics of beat, rhythm and melody. This fast-paced musical adventure provides ample opportunities for participation.

Grade 5

James Gordon, Singer/Songwriter

50-60 minutes

James is one of Canada’s most prolific songwriters. He teaches Grade 5 to 8 students the steps required to compose a song from scratch. The songwriting exercise culminates in an original song composed and sung by the students, recorded live on a CD and given to the class to keep as a memento of the songwriting experience.

MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.

James is one of Canada’s most prolific songwriters. He teaches Grade 5 to 8 students the steps required to compose a song from scratch. Through a variety of media, Tim introduces students to the idea of not just hearing music but to actively listening to music and exploring different musical genres. Tim’s OPEN EARS = OPEN MIND workshop combines hands on classroom activities with fundamental concepts of music in an exciting and dynamic way that will entertain as well as educate.

MAXIMUM 30 STUDENTS PER SESSION.
